Homes and businesses across Cornwall could benefit from faster streaming services after a new project designed to expand superfast broadband in the area has been announced.
A £132 million scheme will see a new fibre-optic network installed across the county to provide faster broadband connections for local residents and companies. The new infrastructure will enable domestic broadband customers, as well as businesses, to benefit from download speeds of up to 100Mbps. About £78.5 million of the funding is coming from BT, while £53.5 million will come from the European Regional Development Fund. It is expected that between 80 per cent and 90 per cent of homes and businesses will have access to fibre broadband by 2014 as part of the scheme. Speaking to BBC News, Cornwall council leader Alec Robertson said the project has the potential to transform the region's economy over the next two decades. "Local businesses will be given an all important head start through early access to world-class communications and this will dramatically increase their competitiveness," he said. ![]() |
