LOVEFiLM has announced that its streaming video software is to make the transition from Adobe Flash to Microsoft's Silverlight in the coming weeks.
The company is making the shift in response to requests by major film studios, which believe that the Silverlight framework offers better security against piracy than Flash does. According to LOVEFiLM streaming project manager Paul Thompson, HTML5 was considered and rejected due to its lack of security provisions, while Silverlight offers the benefit of Smooth Streaming technology. The shift is set to cause compatibility issues for non-Intel Macs and Linux/Unix-based computers, although devices such as games consoles, tablets and internet TVs will not be affected. "Flash software will continue to run alongside Silverlight until the first week of January 2012, so that everyone has time to make the switch," Mr Thompson explained. This comes after Adobe announced in September 2011 that it will be dropping support for the mobile version of Flash in favour of supporting HTML5. Posted by Thomas Price ![]() |
