Spotify could alienate a large number of consumers by charging them for its mobile streaming music service, an expert has warned. Jonathan Shingler, research analyst at GfK Technology, said paying to access Spotify on a mobile phone somewhat defeats the purpose of the service because it has largely been marketed as a free programme. He pointed out that mobile phone users may feel that Spotify's mobile application is not worth it if they have to pay to listen to, rather than own, the music they want. Mr Shingler explained: "Music enthusiasts still prefer to own their music collection and all the costs that currently prevent services like Spotify being truly portable will probably serve to convince those people who still like to own their music that it isn't worth it." Last week (November 23rd), Spotify launched its application for Symbian, the most widely used open mobile phone operating system, making its mobile offering available to a larger audience. ![]() |
