Search engine giant Google has announced the open sourcing of the VP8 video standard, as the company moves to make online streaming video open to all developers.

Google's plans have been backed by a number of hardware manufacturers including Qualcomm, AMB and ARM. A range of software vendors have also endorsed the project. Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product marketing at Google, said: "We think video should be a free and open option for all. It's really important to have high quality and open video."
