Continuing its series of Q&As with some of the speakers at Streaming Media Europe, Craig Moehl, Managing Director of Groovy Gecko gave them a little bit of a taste of what he will be talking about.
Tell us a little about you, your background and your current role.
Being a music lover, I dreamed of having my own music TV station. With the promise of streaming media as an enabling technology, I left MTV to start Groovy Gecko in 1999 to further that dream. Then I realised that I was really interested in expanding this game changing technology to all sectors and Groovy Gecko became a B2B rather than B2C company. GG was, and in many respects still are, ahead of the curve in what we do and I still feel passionate, even though my role has changed somewhat from being an entrepreneur to a manager. We harness that entrepreneurial spirit in the way that we continuously innovate to stay ahead of the curve.
What will you be talking about at Streaming Media Europe? Why have you chosen this subject?
I will be teaming up with Kate Quilton, who is Channel 4’s Multiplatform Commissioning Editor for Factual. We’ll be talking about Channel 4’s recent natural history live streaming projects – Hippo: Wild Feast Live and Foxes Live: Wild in the City. Both projects posed unique live streaming challenges.
Name some key challenges faced by your clients, and tell us how you are overcoming them?
As social media and other factors influences the way in which content is demanded, our clients need to be doing all they can to capture and convert eyeballs to commercial outcomes. We are innovating so provide relevant technical and cost effective solutions to meet these demands. We relish these challenges.
What do you see as major trends in streaming media?
The shift in the way that people now view TV is a fascinating opportunity. I don’t know many people under 30 who have TV screens unless they are hard-core gamers. More and more people are consuming TV “over the top” (OTT.). Since we already have the infrastructure in place to provide 100’s of channels, this is a market trend that we find very exciting.
What’s the do you enjoy the most about your job in this industry?
Groovy Gecko have always been ahead of the curve in what we do and I still feel passionate even though my role has changed somewhat from being an entrepreneur to a manager. We harness that entrepreneurial spirit in the way that we continuously innovate to stay ahead of the curve. I enjoy working with our wonderful clients (such as Kate Quilton) and our brilliant staff on a daily basis and looking for new challenges.
Craig Moehl will be presenting the session Streaming Media as an Essential Complement to Broadcasting with Kate Quilton, Channel 4’s Multiplatform Commissioning Editor for Factual on Tuesday 16th October, 2012, 14.45-15.30.
