Diversity Webinar

Ofcom came to us with a need for a bespoke, highly accessible diversity webinar that required features such as BDSL signing, chat moderator functions and be fully compatible with software for keyboard and speech navigation

Ofcom wanted a seperate website that fit in with their own branding and website pages, available in English and Welsh. An agenda page, speaker bios page (60+ speakers), online Q&A, reminder emails and notifications, an OnDemand page with segments, live chat available in both languages, captions for hard of hearing, and a BDSL signer were some of the requirements for this event.

What we did.

We were tasked with building the bespoke platform that would host the event’s live streams. In addition to the default English language feed, we enabled live open captions in both English and Welsh and provided separate streams for ASL (American Sign Language) and BSL (British Sign Language). We also created and enabled the interactive elements on the page for the live audience, including live Q&A submissions on various topics throughout the show.

We also enabled an ability for users to change colours, contrast levels and fonts and zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen. Users could navigate some of the website using just a keyboard or speech recognition software and listen to some of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and Voiceover).

We used tools to check the accessibility of our pages and tailored them to the client’s needs, and also built a chat moderator function so that the moderators could coordinate with each other more easily as there were multiple moderators across two chats (Welsh and English). We built an on-demand page where we uploaded segments throughout the day as well as the main live stream stage.

the results.

The results of this live stream were really great, with an average watch time of over 2 hours and over 9 countries tuning in. The team at Ofcom were really pleased with the event and accessibility options.
