In a landmark event that captivated a global audience, Groovy Gecko was entrusted by the ‘Don’t Extradite Assange’ group to live stream the Julian Assange extradition hearing. Spanning two intense days at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, our mission was to deliver uninterrupted, flexible coverage of speeches, statements, and a supporter’s march, reaching beyond the courthouse to a worldwide audience.

BACKGROUND.

Tasked by the ‘Don’t Extradite Assange’ group, our goal was to amplify the proceedings of Julian Assange’s extradition hearing across the globe. The group sought a broadcasting partner capable of navigating the complexities of live legal updates and engaging a diverse, international audience..

THE CHALLENGE.

The Assange extradition hearing presented unique challenges: the need for agile, real-time coverage responsive to unforeseen developments, and the imperative to broadcast with journalistic integrity and high production value. Our challenge was magnified by the requirement to synchronise multiple camera feeds, integrate live updates, and maintain a continuous, engaging broadcast.

what we did.

We deployed an advanced setup, including two news camera teams armed with LiveU units for direct feed transmission to our Master Control Room (MCR). Within the MCR, we executed a multifaceted broadcast strategy, incorporating vision mixing, updated graphics, embedded live feeds, and pre-recorded content from the DEA team, all while keeping a vigilant eye on the Royal Courts of Justice through a live Picture-in-Picture (PiP) view.

This comprehensive approach transformed our broadcast into an informative mini news programme, extending over the course of the hearing. Our efforts were supported by distributing the live stream across a range of platforms, including social media giants like X, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, as well as traditional broadcasting channels.
